Good RGB is the difference between a gaming room and a bedroom with a PC in it. It's also one of the cheapest transformations you can make — if you put the light in the right places. Here's the placement guide we wish we'd had.
Start behind the monitor
Bias lighting — a soft glow on the wall behind your screen — is the single best RGB placement. It reduces the contrast between a bright screen and a dark room, which means less eye strain during long sessions, and it makes any monitor look more premium. An LED strip stuck to the back of the display or a pair of light bars either side both work; strips are cheaper, bars are cleaner-looking and easier to reposition.
Then define the room's edges
Light reads best along lines and corners: under the desk lip, along a shelf, up a wall corner, around a door frame. A 5-metre strip covers a desk and shelf; a 10-metre run will trace most small rooms. Keep it to one or two colour zones — a room where every strip runs a different rainbow effect looks like a mobile phone shop.
Pick a palette and stick to it
Two colours max is the designer's trick. Pick a dominant colour that suits your room and an accent for contrast — then set every light to match. Static or slow-fade modes look far more deliberate than fast rainbow cycling. If you game late, warmer or dimmer settings in the hour before bed are kinder on your sleep than full-brightness blue.
Renting? You're the ideal RGB customer
LED strips and freestanding light bars need no drilling, no wiring and no permission from a landlord. Adhesive-backed strips peel off at the end of a lease (pull slowly, use a hairdryer on stubborn spots), and everything packs into a moving box. It's the one part of a dream setup that renters can go all-in on.
A quick safety note
Stick with the power adaptor supplied with your lighting, don't chain more strip length onto one controller than it's rated for, and buy from sellers who comply with Australian electrical safety requirements. Cheap no-name adaptors from random marketplaces are where lighting goes wrong.
